2023 Bonnet-Huteau Bonnet Orange
Produced from 100% Pinot Gris grown in organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Loire Valley, Bonnet Orange is Domaine Bonnet-Huteau’s contemporary interpretation of a skin-contact wine. Crafted with minimal intervention and without the addition of sulphur during vinification, the wine reflects the estate’s commitment to expressing both grape variety and terroir through natural winemaking practices.
The wine is made using extended skin maceration, with a portion of the fruit remaining on skins for approximately 12 days and the remainder for up to one month. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, followed by maturation in a combination of underground concrete tanks and egg-shaped terracotta vessels. This approach enhances texture, complexity and structure while preserving freshness and aromatic purity. The wine is bottled with minimal intervention, allowing its distinctive character to shine through.
Pale salmon-orange in colour, the 2023 vintage offers expressive aromas of peach, apricot, nectarine and citrus peel, complemented by subtle floral notes and hints of dried herbs. The palate is textured and energetic, combining ripe stone fruit with notes of dried citrus and gentle tea-like tannins derived from skin contact. Fresh acidity and a distinct mineral character provide balance and precision, leading to a long, savoury finish with a delicate grip.
Bright, versatile and highly food-friendly, Bonnet Orange is an approachable introduction to the world of skin-contact wines. It pairs beautifully with seafood, shellfish, charcuterie, roasted vegetables, Middle Eastern cuisine and a wide range of hard and soft cheeses.
