Stretching across the sun-drenched valleys of the Alazani and Iori rivers, the Kakheti wine region is the undisputed powerhouse of Georgian viticulture, responsible for over 70% of the nation’s wine production. Cradled by the dramatic peaks of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, its unique cinnamonic soils, high iron content, and moderately continental climate create the ultimate environment for robust, structured wines.
Kakheti is globally revered as a primary cradle of the world’s oldest continuous winemaking tradition, spanning 8,000 years. Unlike the lighter style of western Imereti, classical Kakhetian vinification leans heavily on the unyielding use of large, underground clay amphorae called qvevri. Here, white grapes are fermented entirely on their skins, seeds, and stalks (chacha) for up to six months, extracting deep tannins and complex phenolic compounds to produce Kakheti’s legendary, full-bodied amber wines.
The terroir is anchored by its two signature indigenous grapes: Rkatsiteli, a versatile white variety that delivers highly structured, tannic amber profiles, and Saperavi, an intense red teinturier grape with dark flesh and skins that produces deeply opaque, age-worthy red wines. The region also features exceptional micro-zones, from the bone-dry, oak-aged reds of the Mukuzani PDO to the naturally semi-sweet, luscious reds of the Kindzmarauli PDO.
