2022 Massimo Rivetti Barbaresco ‘Froi’
Produced from 100% Nebbiolo grown on the Rivetti family’s organically farmed Froi vineyard in Neive, this single-vineyard Barbaresco reflects one of the estate’s most distinctive sites. The name “Froi” originates from the local Piedmontese dialect and refers to a cool, breezy place, a fitting description for this elevated vineyard where excellent air circulation and moderate temperatures help preserve freshness, aromatic intensity and balance. Calcareous clay soils further contribute to the wine’s elegance and structure.
Following hand harvesting, the grapes undergo temperature-controlled fermentation with extended skin contact to extract colour, tannin and complexity. The wine is then matured for approximately 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing Nebbiolo’s character and vineyard expression to remain at the forefront while gradually refining its structure and developing additional depth.
The 2022 vintage displays classic aromas of rose petals, violet, wild cherry and red plum, complemented by subtle notes of dried herbs, tobacco and sweet spice. The palate is refined and beautifully poised, combining vibrant red fruit with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and a pronounced mineral backbone. Elegant rather than powerful, it unfolds with precision and persistence, culminating in a long, savoury finish marked by floral lift and freshness.
A sophisticated and site-driven expression of Barbaresco, “Froi” offers immediate appeal with decanting but possesses the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next decade and beyond. An ideal companion to game dishes, slow-braised meats, wild mushrooms and truffle-based cuisine.
